All about the Cape Verde Sailing Holiday.

They say that the Cape Verde Islands were created out of the crumbs that fell from God’s hands as he wiped them clean at the end of the creation.

The Cape Verde Islands lie 460 miles off the West African coast in the Atlantic Ocean, located on the African plate and are of volcanic origin. The islands are divided into two groups; the Islands over the Wind (North Group) and the Windward Islands (Southern Group). The northern group includes Santo Antao, Sao Vicente, São Nicolau, Sal, Boa Vista, Santa Luzia, Branco and Raso. The southern group includes Maio, Santiago, Fogo, Brava and Ilhéus Rombo Thurs. The capital of the archipelago is the Praia, located in the volcanic Santiago, the largest island of the group. Even in the capital, the pace is slow, and there lies the heart of the islands nightlife with musical events and dances. Within walking distance of Praia is the Cidade Velha, the first colonial city that was built in the tropics, which is now a world heritage of UNESCO.

São Vicente is dominated by the mighty Monte Verde peak (750 metres). Together with the two other mountain ranges (the Madeiral and Fateixa), it defines the appearance of the island. From here, you have a good view of the surrounding countryside and the city of Mindelo, the cultural centre of the Cape Verdean archipelago.

To the north we can sail to the port of Porto Novo on Santo Antao. To get there we must sail over the Canal de Sao Vicente, a 16 km wide sea channel separating the two islands. Located in the southeast of São Vicente is São Nicolau – a mountainous island with magnificent, wide beaches.

The easternmost point of the Cape Verde islands is the Boa Vista. With 55 miles of beaches, plenty of sunshine and blue skies it is easy to see why the island has its name. Boa Vista offers the best conditions for water sport enthusiasts, so be ready for diving and snorkeling.

Why sailing in Cape Verde?

  • Cape Verde offers superb beaches and a great year-round climate (best time being from November to March).
  • The climate is tropical, similar to the Caribbean, but drier with very rare precipitation.
  • Apart from the freshest seafood, Cape Verde is known for its great diversity of desserts and tropical fruit, juicier than anything you have ever tried.
  • Although it lacks in natural resources, Cape Verde is often cited as an example among African countries for its achievements in stability and growth.

No, sailing experience is not required to go on a sailing holiday with us. But, if you wish to sail yourself, our skippers will be more than happy to teach you the basics of sailing.

We provide suggested itineraries in our sailing event, but because everyone is different we can adapt the itinerary to your specific request

Absolutely. A sailing holiday is great for children of all ages. We are visiting different ports and islands every day and there’s always something going on. Our skippers enjoy showing the kids the ropes and even let them get behind the helm for a bit of sailing! We will provide children with life jackets and safety harnesses, as well as netting completely the sailboat. It’s a very safe environment.

Depending on what you wish, you will be eating on the boat during the day and go for dinner in the evenings. Anyway, food and drinks need to be organised separately. You, as a crew, will also need to take care of your skipper. You need to have enough food and drinks on board for the skipper to eat and drink during the day and in the evening.

Plane tickets and transfers to the marina are not included. But, if you wish, we could take care of the entire package for you.

Seasickness is very rare and there seem to be good options, from medicine to seasickness wristbands.

Provide the skipper with food and drinks while you are on holiday…he is the one that will TAKE YOU PLACES YOU’VE NEVER BEEN and WILL SHOW YOU THINGS YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN
